I peer over at Everly as she finishes the chapter and closes the diary. I felt a twinge in my stomach. Was she making the same connections I just did? An angel with no memories and soft green eyes. Just the thought is making me feel sick. I’m sure Everly is the hidden angel from her diary, but why? Also, the oracle referenced a second dragon war, but there has only been one. It seems that I need to read this diary for myself.

Twenty-Seven

MARCUS

Drew is a slimy bastard, that’s for sure. I have been following him for weeks and haven’t been able to get a solid lead on where the rest of his guild is hiding. He’s a hunter, a dragon slayer specifically, and they never hunt solo. Never. Still, the bits and pieces I have gathered lead me to believe he is getting ready to move his base of operations to the main camp. Hopefully, he will lead me to the rest of them.

Right now, he’s sitting two tables from me in an outdoor cafe, sipping his cappuccino. I guess psycho-hunters can like coffee too. He propped his feet up on the back of the chair next to him while flirting with the server. His eyes follow her as she leaves his table, not even trying to be subtle about checking out the server’s ass.

Drew’s phone chirps, and he quickly answers. His carefree attitude evaporates as he clenches his phone until his fingertips are white. “Fine. I’m coming now,” he spits out.

Drew drives past me just as I reach my truck. I pulled out into traffic and followed him for nearly an hour. We are the only ones on the long, straight, two-lane road. So, when he turns onto a gravel path, I continue driving forward. He is probably already suspicious of me following behind him, though I have kept my distance. Following him through his turn would only set off alarm bells. I’ll park my truck and return to the area on foot.

I slip quietly through the heavily wooded area surrounding the compound. After following the gravel path for about three miles, it ended in a small parking lot with nearly three dozen cars. A narrow dirt path continued beyond the parking area, and I tiptoed through the trees parallel to the track, keeping my eyes out for any hunters on patrol.

It doesn’t take long before I come upon a sizable fortress, for lack of a better word. So far, I have circled the compound almost three times. All the buildings seem to be made of heavy gray stone, so not a temporary encampment then. There’s a large two-story building. Across from it are two long one-story buildings perpendicular to the larger building. Behind that are three smaller square one-story buildings, set closer to the edge of the clearing, and an open-air structure I feel sure is a forge. One appears to be food storage, and another housing weapons. I hadn’t seen anyone come or go from the third building, so I couldn’t be sure what it contained.
